This certificate program prepares coaches at all levels from amateur to professional to hone their coaching competencies and skills. The courses in the program allow coaches to develop their abilities in the areas set by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE). These areas include coaching philosophy and ethics, safety and injury prevention, growth and development, teaching and communication, sport skills and tactics, organization and administration, and evaluation of their program. Four courses will provide students with advanced knowledge, skills and abilities in different areas of coaching.

Method of Delivery



The Online Graduate Certificate in Coaching program is designed to provide online advanced coaching education to people coaching in: Youth Leagues, Recreation Leagues, Interscholastic, Amateur clubs, Collegiate (NCAA, NJCAA, NAIA), International, and Professional fields.

Core Courses

These courses may not be offered every semester.

  • APK5121 Sport and Exercise Psychology for Coaches (3)
    This course focuses on the theoretical and practical knowledge needed in coaching various sports, emphasizing critical thinking and application of scientific findings.
  • PET5235 Motor Learning for Coaches (3)
    This course offers coaches a better understanding of the processes underlying the learning and performance of skill movements. Focus is on how humans learn skilled actions and how the principles of motor performance and learning can be useful in coaching. Topics cover theories and principles explaining motor behavior and psychological factors related to and/or affecting motor-skill acquisition or performance.
  • PET5735 Advanced Coaching (3)
    This course covers key topics pertaining to coaching, from developing a coaching philosophy to managing a team effectively. Topics include the eight domains of coaching competencies, thus addressing the National Standards for Sport Coaches.
  • SPM5350 Athlete Recruitment (3)
    This advanced course deals with the collegiate recruiting of athletes. Topics cover all facets of recruiting, including evaluation, compliance, technology, visits, commitments, and issues.

Applicants must have earned a Bachelor degree prior to admission.

Application Procedures

Students must apply to the Coaching Certificate program via the online application located at the College of Education website.

Program Requirements

To receive the coaching certificate, students must complete the required course work including the professional portfolio within a five year time period from the date of acceptance into the program and earn a grade of B or better.


The cost of this program is equal to tuition and fees for the Academic Year 2018-19 as stated on the Student Business Services website, plus a per credit hour distance learning fee (fees vary by course). Contact the department for more specific fee information relative to student status and location.
