See limited-time offer for CLEP exams at the bottom of this page.

The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) offers the opportunity for students to demonstrate college-level achievement in undergraduate courses. They are designed to award college credit for what students already know in Composition and Literature, Foreign Languages, History and Social Sciences, Science and Mathematics, and Business. Each exam is 90 minutes and primarily multiple-choice, though some exams do have fill-ins. The exception is the College Composition exam which is 120 minutes with multiple choice and 2 essay portions.

CLEP Scores and University Course Equivalents

Contact your academic advisor to find out which CLEP tests you should take, and visit the CollegeBoard website for information about specific tests, to register for an exam, to purchase study guides, and for further information on policies and procedures.

We also recommend checking out Modern States' Freshman Year for FreeTM program, which offers free CLEP-preparation courses and vouchers for exam fees.

Registration and Payment

CLEP exams are offered most business days between 9:00am and 3:00pm. You must register and pay in advance.

There are two separate payments that are required to register for the CLEP. For current Florida State University students, a payment of $12 is payable by FSUCash only. For non-FSU students, or for FSU students wishing to pay the administrative fee in advance, a payment of $15.50 must be made online. This payment is non-refundable. The second payment is payable directly to CLEP when you register online.

One form of government-issued identification, such as a driver’s license or passport, will be acceptable for CLEP test-takers. It must be valid and current, must bear the test-taker’s full name in English language characters, and must contain a photograph and a signature.
